During the first week of the Festival Speech and Drama takes centre stage. Six competition rooms running concurrently are guaranteed to create a lively atmosphere and keep the organisers busy.

At the Mid-Somerset we try to combine all of the traditional elements you might find in a festival with a modern approach to Drama and the Performing Arts. In recent years we have introduced classes that link with Dance, Music and Creative Writing and we actively encourage the creation of original work.

Many of our classes address the requirements of the National Curriculum and provide the opportunity in both Junior and Senior sections for public performance. We also run workshops to help our entrants improve and maintain skills.

Our week ends with a concert where we award our major trophies and enjoy some of the best work of the festival. The evening culminates in the final play off for our prestigious Actors Award.

Whether you want to perform with a group or are happiest with solo work, whether you are interested in Storytelling or Shakespeare, whether you want to explore our rich literary heritage or create your own original script, the Mid-Somerset Festival will have something for you.

Full details of all classes can be found in the syllabus.

Whatever your interest our professional Speech & Drama adjudicators aim to provide a constructive and meaningful experience for all.
