The Thelma King Instrumental Award is aimed at high achievers in the solo instrumental classes. It is open to all string, woodwind and brass players.
The Mid-Somerset Festival is delighted to give the opportunity for a young player to be awarded a place on the European Youth Summer Music Course run by the British and International Federation of Festivals (or other orchestral course of your choice up to a value of £450, at the discretion of the Music Chairman).
This exciting week-long orchestral course takes place in Haileybury College, Hertfordshire, late July – early August 2009. There are orchestras and bands for all abilities, plus lots of other activities, including a visit to a Promenade concert in London.
To be considered, you must enter one of the following Advanced Repertoire classes: violin/viola; cello/double bass; woodwind; or brass, and indicate on your entry form that you wish to be considered. For the Advanced Repertoire classes, players should be of Grade 7 and above, and prepare 2 or 3 pieces of contrasting style and period, at least one of which should be from memory.
The adjudicators will select from the Repertoire classes a shortlist that you will then be asked to play in a final early evening on Wednesday 25th March 2009. For this final you should play two of your repertoire class pieces.
The winner will be expected to play at the Saturday evening music concert on 28th March 2009, when the award will be formally presented.
The winner in 2008 was an exceptionally talented double bass player, who is looking forward to taking part in the course at Haileybury College this summer.
